Emergency and Critical Care

The emergency and critical care team are available around the clock to make sure your dog or cat is given the necessary attention in a time of need. If your primary care veterinarian is unable to squeeze you in to their already busy schedule but you feel that your pet cannot wait, please give us a call. However, just like in a human emergency department, we utilize a triage system, so if your pet is stable, please be understanding if someone else needs to be seen first.

Some common emergencies that we see here at Bridgetown include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Lameness
  • Skin or Ear infections
  • Trouble urinating
  • Weakness or lack of energy
  • Eye emergencies (squinting, redness or discharge, trauma)
  • Treatment of respiratory emergencies
  • Traumatic injuries; fractures, bite wounds, burns, lacerations and motor vehicle accidents
  • Metabolic emergencies
  • Wound Management
  • Provide blood component therapy and anticoagulation monitoring
  • Provide post-surgical Critical Care monitoring and support
  • Treat life threatening neurologic disorders (loss of balance, seizures, circling behavior)
  • Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Treatment of Congestive Heart Failure

Emergency Veterinarian?

Being an emergency veterinarian is not for the faint of heart.  The work hours for these doctors are often chaotic and there is never a “typical day” in the emergency room.  These doctors remain calm under pressure and have the flexibility to adapt to whatever situation may occur.  It is common for pet owners to feel stressed and overwhelmed during these situations but the emergency department at BVER is here to help during these difficult times.

Veterinary Criticalist?

Criticalists are able to deal with just about anything that presents to the hospital.  Some days are filled with vomiting, diarrhea and minor wounds; others involve emergency surgery, heart failure, open chest trauma, and toxin ingestion. Criticalists are a diverse group of doctors with the ability to take care of some of the most critical patients, which means there is never a dull moment in the critical care unit! The criticalists at BVER will work very closely with the emergency doctors and the other specialists in the hospital to make sure each patient is getting the most immediate and best care possible.
