Tracheal Stenting
Tracheal Stenting Now Available!
Tracheal collapse is a common condition in small-breed dogs and can cause a persistent cough, difficulty breathing and, in severe cases, respiratory distress.
Most dogs with tracheal collapse are managed with medications, weight management and minimizing stress. However, some pets continue to have significant symptoms despite medical management or they may experience an acute airway crisis.
For these dogs, tracheal stenting can provide a minimally invasive treatment option to help keep the airway open.
What is tracheal stenting?
A tracheal stent is a small, expandable metal device that is placed inside the collapsed portion of the windpipe to help keep it open. The stent is placed using specialized imaging called fluoroscopy allowing for precise placement without the need for surgery.
Tracheal stenting is considered a salvage procedure and is generally recommended for dogs with severe tracheal collapse that is not adequately controlled with medical management.
What can you expect after stent placement?
Most dogs experience a significant improvement in breathing and quality of life following stent placement. However, tracheal stenting does not cure the underlying condition, and some coughing is expected to continue. Ongoing medical management remains an important part of long-term care, although many patients are able to transition to a less intensive medication plan.
